Abstract

Terrestrial green algae mostly belong to the two algal classes Chlorophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae; however, new studies have shown that these algae are also distributed in different lineages of the Ulvophyceae. We investigated two new strains isolated from biological crusts which were collected from two different sites in south-west Africa. Light microscopic studies and phylogenetic analyses of SSU rDNA sequences have revealed that these strains were closely related to Desmochloris halophila, a species isolated from mixohaline environment. Comparisons of morphology and secondary structures of ITS-1 and ITS-2 rDNA sequences have clearly demonstrated that both new strains represented a new species of Desmochloris. Based on these results, we propose a new species of Desmochloris name D. mollenhaueri, in honour of Prof. Dr. Dieter Mollenhauer for his impressive contribution to phycology.
