Abstract

This paper is a continuation of our study on the recent pennate diatom assemblages of Lake Baikal. Four species belonging to the genus Cavinula are studied and described as new for science. The description of C. jasnitskii sp. nov., C. uschkaniensis sp. nov., C. dybowskii sp. nov. and C. buben sp. nov. is based on extensive analysis in light (LM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy. For each species, detailed morphological characteristics which justify their placement in Cavinula are provided. The species described are compared to established Cavinula taxa. The analysis of published sources shows that none of the species presented here has been previously reported. All are only known from Lake Baikal and it is highly likely that they are endemic components of its recent diatom flora.
