The title mol­ecule, C24H17NO3S, is the first example of the 1H-furo[3,4-b]pyrrole ring system to be described. It crystallizes with three mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit. In each mol­ecule, the fused heterocycle is planar and one of the two phenyl groups on the furan ring is only slightly out of planarity with the furan ring, while the other phenyl group is significantly twisted by 47.6 (4), 48.3 (3) and 54.1 (3)°.

Special details top

Geometry. All e.s.d.'s (except the e.s.d. in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix.
