Abstract

The angular dependence of the magnetic linear dichroism in Fe and Co 3p photoemission is investigated. The dichroism has the same symmetry behavior as in the free atom, and vanishes when integrated over all angles. However, the angular dependence shows pronounced deviations from the sin2θ dependence of the free atom. The qualitative features can be understood in terms of a photoelectron diffraction picture, taking into account the details of the final state wave functions with respect to angular momentum and magnetic quantum numbers.
