Abstract

The anomalous $J / ψ$ suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 $A$ GeV observed recently by NA50 can be explained as due to the transition to a phase of strong $J / ψ$ absorption, which sets in when the local energy density exceeds about 3.4 GeV/fm $^{3}$ .
