Abstract
We present small- and wide-angle x-ray diffraction data of chiral and racemic dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine bilayers in the “ripple” phase. In both cases, this phase is found to be characterized by asymmetric ripples. This result differs from that of Lubensky and MacKintosh [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 1565 (1993)], whose model predicts symmetric ripples in achiral systems.
