Abstract
A gauge theory based on SU(3) ⊗ U(1), unifying weak and electromagnetic interactions of leptons and hadrons, is presented. The leptons and the hadronic quarks enter in a completely symmetric manner in the model. The weak interactions arise from the spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry. The model has no undesirable interactions. It is also pointed out that the model is free from anomalies and so is expected to be renormalizable.
