Abstract

A semiempirical band structure for PtGa2 was obtained by adjusting the AuGa2 parameters in the mixed-basis band-structure interpolation scheme to obtain agreement between the calculated total density of states (DOS) and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy data. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data collected from a PtGa2 (111) surface with a noble-gas-discharge lamp as excitation source were used to check the energies of the d bands. The PtGa2 band structure is compared to those of both elemental Pt and Au, and the gold color of PtGa2 is explained in terms of its Au-like DOS.
