Abstract

We show that by coupling additional laser fields to a three-level atom it is possible to modify effective spontaneous emission rates and line shapes in a manner similar to that previously associated with cavities and waveguides. The effect is related to the laser-induced continuum structure discussed in the context of ionization processes.
