The Editors of Learning & Memory are pleased to publish this special issue covering neurobiological disorders affecting cognition.

There are a multitude of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders that degrade normal cognition and cause dementia. These diseases erode the function and quality of the patient's life and extract a tremendous toll on their caregivers in terms of time, stress, and financial support. In 2015, the total global societal cost of diseases causing dementia was estimated to be US$ 818 billion, equivalent to 1.1% of global gross domestic product (GDP). The total cost as a proportion of GDP varied from 0.2% in low- and middle-income countries to 1.4% in high-income countries (World Health Organization). Given these enormous burdens, understanding the neurobiological mechanism underlying these disorders and identifying interventions with potential to prevent or delay their onset is an urgent public health priority.

This special issue presents five research articles investigating the neurobiology …
