The accurate replication and precise segregation of allchromosomes of a genome are essential for survival of acell. Cells have evolved complex surveillance mechanisms to ensure the faithful transmission of genetic information. These mechanisms are critical not only for monitoring the progression of the normal cell cycle, but alsofor cellular survival in response to DNA damage(Hartwell and Weinert 1989; Elledge 1996).
