Abstract
The broad goals of the new discipline of nanophotonics are to develop concepts of optical functionality on the smallest possible spatial scale, at the lowest possible energy level, and on the shortest possible timescale by employing light interactions with nanostructures. A topical issue of Journal of Optics A: Pure and Applied Optics will be devoted to papers reporting new and challenging results in this burgeoning field. Focused topical reviews within the special issue remit will also be considered, but potential contributors of such reviews should first contact the Guest Editors. Papers in other areas will also be considered for the issue as long as they offer ideas relevant for the field of nanophotonics.
The special issue topics will include, but are not limited to:
• Plasmonic nanophotonics • Nano-transmission lines and nano-antennas • Light in confined geometries and nano-cavities • Single molecule and single nanoparticle photonics • Quantum and coherent effects in nanophotonics • Nonlinear and ultrafast nanophotonics • Interaction of electron beams with nanophotonic structures • Nano-bio-photonics • Nanoscale imaging and photolithography • Optical atom trapping and manipulation in nanostructures
All papers will be peer reviewed, and the normal refereeing standards of Journal of Optics A: Pure and Applied Optics will be maintained. There are no page charges. Manuscripts should be submitted to the Publisher by 1 September 2005, although authors are strongly encouraged to submit their work as soon as possible. Please include a covering letter stating that the submission is intended for the nanophotonics topical issue, to avoid treatment as a regular submission.
