Abstract
High-energy electron irradiation of stoichiometric LiNbO3 produces a broad absorption band similar in form and structure to that observed in electron-irradiated congruent samples and in samples thermochemically reduced. The band shows a definite energy threshold for production, consistent with oxygen displacement damage. The observations, adequately explained in terms of F and F+ centres, imply that oxygen vacancies also play a role in reduced samples.
