Abstract

A method of obtaining quadratic variations in resistance from ordinary variable resistors (e.g. of decade-dial type) is described, and it is shown how this may be applied to the construction of an electrical calculating bridge for solving second-degree algebraic equations. An instrument, designed on this principle for reduction of data in three-dimensional sound-ranging, is briefly described, and some indication is given of the sphere of usefulness and the probable accuracy of such instruments.
