Abstract

A theory of the birefringence produced in a substance perpendicular to a strong magnetic field (the Cotton-Mouton effect) is presented. Allowance is made for electrical anisotropy induced directly by the magnetic field, an effect which can occur even for isotropic molecules. The effect of molecular interaction on measurements in dense gases and liquids is also considered.
