Abstract
Despite the large amount of literature on tissue mechanics available it is still far easier to list knowledge gaps which exist and work that requires to be done than to identify any achievement commensurate with the research effort expended and which can truly be claimed as relevant to the human patient. The reasons for this are explored. After a summary of basic concepts, the structure and function of tissue, biomechanical characterization and modelling of tissue and clinical applications are discussed.
