The influence of the Arabs in bringing to western Europe such contributions as the sign for zero, which rendered possible among other things the computations of Kepler, was one of the factors that were ingredient to the rise of modern science. Such words as algebra, alidade and alchemy all show their Arab ancestry, and we know something of Arabic contributions to the sciences that they indicate; but we know much less about Arabic engineering and applications of physics.
