A survey of galaxy redshifts. II. The large scale space distribution.
Abstract
A redshift survey of galaxies complete to a limiting Zwicky magnitude 14.5 in the north and south galactic polar caps above a declination of zero degrees is presented. Various projections of the redshift-space maps are given, and it is found that the statistical nature of the redshift-space distribution is very similar between north and south. The space distribution of galaxies is frothy and characterized by large filamentary superclusters of up to 60 Mpc, corresponding to large holes devoid of galaxies. Redshift-space maps are also presented, which were generated from n-body simulations, and roughly match the density and amplitude of the galaxy clustering.
