The Absolute Magnitudes and Spectral Types of the Stars in the Gamma Velorum System.
Abstract
The ratio of the visual luminosities of the components of the binary system, 2 Vel, WC8 + 0, is derived by comparison of the emission-line strengths in the spectrum with those of HD t921O3 (WC8). We find A1v(WC8) - Iv(O) = 1.4 + 0.1 mag. The classification of the 0 star is found to be 09 I and is without marked peculiarities. The absolute visual mngnitude, -6.4, derived by Graham for the 2 Vel system, is confirmed by additional measures. The resulting absolute visual magnitudes of the individual components of the system are Mv(WC8) = - 4.8 + 0.3, Mv (09 1) = -6.210.2, and M,, (WC8) = -4.910.3 in the narrow-band system of Smith. This result indicates that all WC stars have about the same absolute visual magnitude. The assumption of similarity of the emission spectrum of 2 Vel to that of HD 192103 and the appearance of the absorption spectrum of the 09 I star are also discussed.
