A new search technique for M and C stars.
Abstract
A method is described for identifying cool stars of types M and C by means of direct photography through narrowband interference filters. The relative magnitudes in filters centered at 7780 and 8120 A reveal the presence of absorption by TiO or CN, respectively, while a third filter at 10,400 A allows the definition of a color index. Photographs of selected globular cluster fields have been taken through the 2-in.-diam filters with an S-1 image tube. Results are presented here for the central region of 47 Tucanae in which 14 new M stars, including five in the range M3-M5, have been found; no carbon stars were found.
