Significance

The Rh-Fe3O4 nanocrystals were prepared by treatment of Rh(acac)3 with Fe(acac)3 in a mixture of oleylamine and oleic acid followed by the thermal decomposition (eq. 1). The nanocrystals catalyzed the reduction of nitroarenes with hydrazine in ethanol to give the corresponding anilines in 94-99% yield (9 examples, eq. 2). Olefins also underwent the reduction in the presence of the nanocrystals to afford the corresponding alkanes in 78-99% yield (9 examples, eq. 3).
