Significance

The authors report the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric enyne cycloisomerization reaction of terminal alkynes and apply this methodology to the formal total synthesis of (-)-platensimycin. A key to the success of their catalyst system is the use of a well-defined rhodium complex.
