A novel coplanar slow wave electrode geometry suitable for travelling wave electro-optic modulators was fabricated on semi-insulating GaAs and measured up to 40 GHz. With these electrodes, modulator voltages can be applied across very small gaps while keeping the microwave loss low, the phase velocity matched and the characteristic impedance close to 50 Ω.
