Solvation spectra. Part 29.—Nuclear magnetic resonance studies of electrolyte solutions : ion-solvent interactions in methanol
Abstract
Measured shifts in the hydroxyl proton resonance of methanol are divided into individual cation and anion shifts using a procedure outlined previously. The results can be satisfactorily accommodated in terms of the relative effects of hydrogen bonding to methanol and bonding to the ions, without invoking any major contribution from structural changes remote from the ions, without invoking any major contribution from structural changes remote from the ions. The anion shifts correlate reasonably well with their relative basicities and also with the proton shifts for their conjugate acids.
