Cross-phenomenological coefficients. Part 6.—Dufour effect in gases

Abstract

An apparatus for the measurement of temperature gradients in gases when concentration gradients are imposed in the system has been described. The resulting ΔT have been measured for several pairs of gases. The results are interpreted on the basis of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes and the kinetic theory of Chapman and Enskog. Thermal diffusion factors have been estimated for several pairs of gases. The dependence of ΔT on pressure has also been investigated.
