Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic study of adsorption of ketene on zinc oxide
Abstract
Chemisorption of ketene (H2CCO) on the surface of ZnO has been studied by FTIR spectroscopy at room temperature and at 178–183 K. Reduction of the surface was observed in both cases, but was depressed significantly at low temperature. Absorption bands of surface hydroxy groups disappeared during ketene chemisorption both at room and low temperature. Two sets of IR absorption bands at 1565 and 1445 cm–1 and at 1520, 1420 and 1305 cm–1 were observed upon room temperature chemisorption, associated with two different types of ketene chemisorption products: surface acetates, produced by reaction of ketene with OH groups, and surface ‘carbonate-like’ species, formed by reaction with O2– anions accompanied by overall reduction of ZnO.
