Study of the valence-electronic structure of UF4, ThF4, UCl4 and ThCl4 in the gas phase and in the solid state

Abstract

The valence-electronic structure of the actinide halides UF4, ThF4, UCl4 and ThCl4 has been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy in the gas phase using He II radiation and in the solid state using Al radiation. These investigations show that both in the solid state and in the gas phase the electronic structures of the uranium and thorium tetrahalides are very similar except for the presence of two metal 5ƒ electrons in the uranium compounds.
