Solid state dimerisation of β-nitrostyrene: a disordered photoreactive crystal

Abstract

The unusual solid state dimerisation of β-nitrostyrene to yield two isomeric cyclobutanes is accounted for by its disordered, photoreactive crystal structure which permits a transcis isomerisation.
