Rhodium(I)-catalysed asymmetric hydrogenation of imines

Abstract

The imines ArC(Me)[double bond, length half m-dash]NCH2Ph (Ar = Ph, 2-MeO-C6H4, 4-MeO-C6H4) are hydrogenated to the corresponding secondary amines at 1000 psig H2, in 1 : 1 C6H6/MeOH, using an in situ RhI/(R)-cycphos system (cycphos = Ph2PCH(C6H11)CH2PPh2); a maximum of 91% enantiomeric excess (e.e.) is achieved at lower temperatures (–25 °C) in the presence of iodide cocatalyst.
