Synthesis, structure, luminescence and electrochemical studies of a novel class of ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes with orthometallated aminocarbene ligands

Abstract

A series of ruthenium(II) orthometallated aminocarbene complexes have been synthesized and characterized. Their electrochemistry, electronic absorption, emission, and the crystal structures of [[upper bond 1 start]Ru(phen)2{[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)NHC[upper bond 1 end]6H4}]CF3SO3, [[upper bond 1 start]Ru(bpy)2{[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2Ph)NMeC[upper bond 1 end]6H4}]PF6 and [[upper bond 1 start]Ru(bpy)2{[double bond, length as m-dash]C(CH2C4H3S)NHC[upper bond 1 end]6H4}]CF3SO3 have been studied. The nature of the electronic transitions and the origin of the emission are discussed and an assignment of a 3MLCT emission has been supported by EHMO studies.
