Cardiovascular combinations

Combination products have long been a mainstay of line extension strategies for hypertension products, and the addition of a diuretic has increased sales of many of these products by as much as 20% of those of the primary compound. As a natural progression, in the mid-to-late 1990s, pharmaceutical companies reached beyond diuretic combinations by creating inter-class combination hypertension therapies. However, with one notable exception, most of these inter-class products failed commercially due to lack of a strong clinical rationale and physician acceptance. In spite of the mixed commercial results for these non-diuretic combinations, some drug companies have taken the next, dramatic step of developing and creating combination products outside of hypertension and for other cardiovascular disease states.
