An erythematous mass on the lip of a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus)

A 2-year-old male guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) had been adopted as a pup from a pet shop by its owner. The animal was housed alone in a cage with long periods of free range in the house and had no contact with other animals. The guinea pig was fed hay ad libitum and fresh vegetables (approximately 80 g per day) and received 25 mg per kg body weight oral vitamin C (Daily C; Oxbow Animal Health, Murdock, NE) daily.

The guinea pig presented with an erythematous mass on the upper left lip and pruritus on the body. The owner stated that the mass had been present for almost 2 months, and the pruritus had started 1 month before presentation. The guinea pig had no prior history of medical problems.
