Late Miocene Marine and Non-marine Time Scale in Europe

Abstract

Argon isotope dating on the island of Samos contributes to the reconciliation of continental and marine time scales in the Mediterranean basin; the first appearance of Hipparion, widely accepted as the criterion for the beginning of the Pliocene in land mammal successions, has been shown to be middle Miocene.
