Abstract
THE belief that the naturally occurring steroid hormones represent the highest attainable biological activity has been disproved by recent work. Most emphasis has been placed on the introduction of substituents in the steroid nucleus, while changing the configuration at the centres of asymmetry has received relatively little consideration1–3 and has so far not led to therapeutically active compounds.
