Abstract

Superconducting carbides of the rare earth metals and the novel layered carbide halides of these metals, both containing C2 units, present model systems to study the origin of pairwise attraction between conduction electrons in terms of a tendency towards pairwise localization. The superconducting transition temperature scales with the effective charge of the C2 unit as well as with the size of the metal atom cage around C2. From a materials aspect superconductivity and giant magnetoresistance are related as indicated by the new GMR material GdI2 which structurally and in view of chemical bonding parallels the superconducting niobium and tantalum dichalcogenides.
