Abstract

In Lake Łuknajno submerged macrophytes occupied 50% of lakearea and their mean biomass was 350~g dry weight m−2 in the1993 year. Maximum biomass values of charophytes reached highlevels above 1000~g dry weight m−2 (in a few samples). Duringthe last 20 years changes in submerged macrophytes were mainlyquantitative. In that period the area occupied by plants decreasedtwice, presumable by eutrophication. In 1993 Lake Łuknajno wasstill a Chara-type. Seven species of Characeae were recorded,Chara aculeolata and C.~tomentosa being the mostabundant. The contribution of charophytes to total dry weight ofall submerged macrophytes was 90%. At stations covered with Chara, phosphorus, nitrogen and chlorophyll concentrations weremarkedly lower than at stations devoid of plants.
