Abstract

This paper first introduces the formal definitions of fuzzy functional and multivalued dependencies which are given on the basis of the conformance values presented here. Second, the inference rules are listed after both fuzzy functional and multivalued dependencies are shown to be consistent, that is, they reduce to those of the classic functional and multivalued dependencies when crisp attributes are involved. Finally, the inference rules presented here are shown to be sound and complete for the family of functional and multivalued dependencies in fuzzy database relations.

An extended proximity relation and quantified aggregation for designing robust fuzzy query engine

In this article, we propose a novel model of a robust fuzzy query engine that addresses vagueness in data and users’ requirements. It aims to assist users in recommending similar products or services by retrieving the most suitable entities when the limitations of queries and recommendation approaches are recognized. The proposed fuzzy engine model considers various complex aspects, including imprecise preferences explained by linguistic terms, uncertain data in datasets, connections among elementary requirements, and the lack of historical data necessary for personalized recommendations. To achieve this goal, we propose a similarity matching based on the extended proximity relation and an adapted conformance measure for elementary requirements. In this direction, a new monotonicity property for proximity relation is introduced to ensure consistency in similarities among ordinal categorical data (including binary data) expressed by crisp or fuzzy numbers. Therefore, the conformance measure used to evaluate the similarity between user requirements and attribute values is expressed as a fuzzy number. Next, we propose a quantified aggregation of elementary requirements by strictly monotone fuzzy relative quantifiers. The flexibility is further extended by a convex combination of possibility and necessity measures. A hotel selection experiment is being carried out to explore the potential of the proposed fuzzy query engine. Finally, the limitations and usefulness of the proposed approach are addressed.
Financial literacy and psychological disaster preparedness: applicability of approach based on fuzzy functional dependencies

Recent catastrophes and crises emphasize the necessity of an individual's and household's preparedness for coping with these events. Previous research focuses mainly on short-term preparation and immediate response to catastrophes. The ex ante approach to managing long-term effects can rarely be found in literature, especially with an emphasis on financial preparedness. In this work, we use a soft computing method for analysing the social/psychological effects and implications. Specifically, we focus on data mining and linguistic interpretation of the effects of financial literacy on psychological preparedness for disasters, using fuzzy functional dependencies (FFDs). FFDs determine influences between features in datasets and examine neighbouring categorical answers with a certain degree of similarity, which overcomes indecisiveness when marking a categorical answer. Based on the surveyed data, we show that FFDs offer an approach for discovering additional patterns and explaining those patterns linguistically. Our results are as follows: financial literacy significantly influences anxiety, lack of control, nervousness, and fear of death (in order of intensity). Using this approach, we conclude that being better financially prepared can help in long-term disaster risk management. Financial preparedness is also helpful in mitigating psychological risks related to disasters. This paper provides results that can support the designing knowledge management solutions in order to improve psychological disaster preparedness.
Fuzzy functional dependencies and linguistic interpretations employed in knowledge discovery tasks from relational databases

Knowledge discovery from databases copes with several problems including the heterogeneity of data and interpreting the solution in an understandable and convenient form for domain experts. Fuzzy logic approaches based on the computing with words paradigm are very appealing since they offer the possibility to express useful knowledge from a large volume of data by linguistic terms, which are easily understandable for diverse users. In this paper, the novel descriptive data mining algorithm based on fuzzy functional dependencies has been proposed. In the first step, data are fuzzified, which ensures the same manipulation of crisp and fuzzy data. The data mining step is based on revealing fuzzy functional dependencies among considered attributes. In the final step, the mined knowledge is interpreted linguistically by the fuzzy modifiers and quantifiers. The proposed algorithm has been explained on illustrative data and tested on real-world dataset. Finally, its benefits, weak points and possible future research topics are discussed.
A fuzzy query engine for suggesting the products based on conformance and asymmetric conjunction

Most of the existing query engines built into modern e-commerce platforms retrieve products by means of text and numerical matching. Conventional query engines for conducting product search suffer from several problems because of which they are not good product recommendation engines. First, they solve tasks without considering semantic uncertainties in users’ questions and in data and therefore do not consider partial matching of query conditions. Users may need to input imprecise information to express their preferences or data describing products can be imprecise as well. Second, existing query engines used for conducting product search tasks do not consider conformance among tuples’ features and aggregation of atomic conditions of different nature. Fuzzy query approaches solve majority of problems related to semantic uncertainty, but do not cover all possible flexibilities to a sufficient level. When user defines sharp conditions (even though he might have values similar to provided ones in mind), entity either fully matches or fundamentally differs, regardless of the similarity between feature's value and the value appearing in conditions. This paper proposes a novel approach to suggesting suitable products based on fuzzy conformance between features appearing in the vector of the ideal product from customer's point of view and the features of existing products. In the second stage, several aggregations of atomic conditions for calculating overall matching between user's needs and available products in a data set are discussed. In addition, our approach is able to manage customers’ requirements expressed by constraints (features which should be met) and wishes (it is nice if these features are met) by the and if possible operator. Thus, asymmetric conjunction is an effective way to capture them. Experiments on a data set of used cars have shown promising results. Proposed fuzzy query engine considers some complex behaviors such as imprecise preferences, vague data in datasets, constraints and wishes in users’ requirements without previous history of queries, suggested answers, feedbacks, gathered ratings and customers’ personal data. It provides application in a specific domain of intelligent systems. The proposed framework can be adapted in a straightforward manner to any system for recommending suitable products, especially for the less-frequently purchased ones. Moreover, businesses that are not able to build or manage complex recommendation systems for gathering customer's behavioral data, as well as customers who are concerned with privacy risks might have benefit from this approach.
