Aortic stiffness and distensibility in top-level athletes
2012, Journal of the American Society of EchocardiographyCitation Excerpt :The same group proved an increased aortic distensibility in 30 ATE, mainly related to better diastolic function as a physiologic cardiovascular adaptation.33 Similarly, Erol et al.34 assessed an increased AR distensibility in 33 top-level athletes involved in different kind of sports (runners, wrestlers, boxers, and basketball players). To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that the duration and type of top-level training can influence AR elastic properties and diameter variations, in a large population of 410 top-level athletes.
Aortic stiffness: Current understanding and future directions
2011, Journal of the American College of CardiologyCitation Excerpt :Aerobic exercise training produces several beneficial changes that have been well-reviewed elsewhere (80). Although its direct effects on AS and diastolic function have not yet been completely understood, indirect evidence seems to indicate favorable changes in aortic hemodynamic status with both acute and chronic exercise training (81). Retrospective studies have shown that increased physical activity is correlated with improved aortic PWV when compared with age-matched sedentary control subjects (82,83).
A Comparison of Mechanical Properties of Materials Used in Aortic Arch Reconstruction
2009, Annals of Thoracic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :All the materials become stiffer with increasing stretch (Fig 5). At physiologic strain [22], our results show that Dacron is ∼25 and ∼18 times stiffer than healthy and dilated AAs (Fig 7A; B). No other studies have directly compared the mechanical properties of Dacron with the AA.
