Die negativen gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen, die der Konsum von Tabak und Alkohol nach sich ziehen kann, sind bereits seit längerer Zeit bekannt. Aber erst die Entwicklung moderner epidemiologischer Methoden ermöglichte die Abschätzung der Folgen von Suchterkrankungen auf die Volksgesundheit. Weltweit steht der Tabakkonsum an zweiter Stelle der Todesursachenstatistik stand, gefolgt von dem Alkoholkonsum auf neunter und dem Missbrauch illegaler Drogen an 17. Position.
