Original articleOutcome of Intravitreal Triamcinolone in Uveitis
Section snippets
Patients and Methods
This retrospective interventional case series study reviewed 65 eyes of 54 patients identified from the uveitis services of 2 of the authors (SL, PM). All eyes had clinical uveitic CME, confirmed by fluorescein angiography (FA) and/or ocular coherence tomography (OCT). The patients had shown inadequate response to oral corticosteroid and/or orbital floor corticosteroid injections. Patients were treated with an oral corticosteroid, starting at 1 mg/kg and with tapering attempted to reduce
Results
The patients had a mean follow-up time of 8.0 months (range, 3–51) after intravitreal TA. The mean age was 44±15 years (range, 14–76), and the mean pretreatment duration of CME was 27.7 months (range, 5–70) (Table 1 [available at http://aaojournal.org])
Discussion
This article demonstrates the effects of intravitreal triamcinolone in patients with uveitic CME. The results of this study need to be interpreted with caution because of the bias associated with its nonrandomized and uncontrolled design. In addition, the follow-up period was variable, with many only followed up for a limited time. However, the results strongly suggest that intravitreal TA is a potent form of treatment for uveitis-related CME, expanding the results of previous smaller studies.17

Additionally, the improvements in visual acuity have been reported to have a limited duration, and repeat injections may be needed [53,54]. Other local therapies include CS-delivering technologies that use intravitreal sustained-release implants and inserts.
