Highlights

  • We investigated thirteen pesticides residues in sediments from Vasai Creek of Mumbai.

  • The level of total organochlorine pesticide residues was recorded as 1115.25 ng/g dw.

  • The level of total organophosphorous pesticides residues was 798.15 ng/g dw.

  • The ratio values of DDT residues give an indication of use of technical DDT.

  • The ratio of α/γ-BHC indicate that BHCs might have been received from fresh lindane.

Abstract

Thirteen persistent organic pesticides were investigated in the sediments of Vasai Creek near Mumbai to evaluate their pollution levels and potential risks. It was observed that ΣOCPs level was in the range of 597–1538 ng/g dw, with an average value of 1115.25 ng/g dw. The level of ΣOPPs was in the range of 492–1034 ng/g dw, with an average value of 798.15 ng/g dw. The values o,p′-DDT/p,p′-DDT ratio gives an indication of use of technical DDT as the prime source of DDT, while the α/γ-BHC ratio indicate that BHCs in study area might have been received from fresh lindane. The results of an ecological risk assessment showed that sediment bound organic pesticides are of more ecotoxicological concern as they might create adverse ecological risk to the marine breeding habitats. These pesticides residues may get remobilize and released to overlying waters creating adverse effects on terrestrial and aquatic organisms.

Pesticides are considered as an essential component of modern farming, with an estimated 1–2.5 million tons of active pesticide ingredients used annually in the world and playing a vital role in maintaining highly efficient agricultural productivity (Fenner et al., 2013; McKnight et al., 2015; Jallow et al., 2017). Among these pesticides, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were initially restricted or banned worldwide due to the fact that they were identified as one of the most important groups of persistent organic pollutants in the 1980s (Grung et al., 2015; Singare, 2015). In contrast to the OCPs, some pesticides (organophosphates pesticides and synthetic pyrethroids) are often characterized as being relatively less persistent.

      Citation Excerpt :

Although in India, extensive research work is performed on distribution of pesticide residues in different environmental matrixes, the work on distribution of these residues in aquatic environment is not given much attention. Despite of the importance of Vasai as evident from the previously published work (Singare, 2015; Singare, 2012; Singare et al., 2012a,b,c; Singare et al., 2011; Mehta and Amin, 2008; Lokhande and Kelkar, 1996a; Lokhande and Kelkar, 1996b), no systematic study was performed to understand the distribution of pesticide residues in the aquatic ecosystem. Hence, in the present paper attempts are made to address this deficit and present the results of a comprehensive survey of levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) in the aquatic system of the Vasai Creek.
