SUBJECTS

Two hundred and seventeen published studies that contained clinical data regarding success, failure, and complications of endosseous dental implants and implant prostheses were combined. All articles are in English published between years 1981 and 2001.

PROGNOSTIC FACTORS

Complications of endosseous dental implants and implant prostheses were identified in 6 categories: surgical, implant loss, bone loss, peri-implant soft tissue, mechanical, and esthetic/phonetic. Each complication included must have been reported

Commentary and Analysis

The authors of this review have done a tremendous amount of work pulling together literature of 20 years (1981-2001) regarding complications of endosseous dental implants and the associated prostheses on the basis of their thorough search. It gave us a comprehensive picture of the type of complications and the incidence of each complication. Clinicians will find it helpful when providing dental implant therapy, especially in treatment planning and patient education. The categories of
