Highlights

  • Evidence for shorelines is still lacking.

  • We propose that the lacustrine environments are wetlands, not lakes.

  • Transformation of the lacustrine environments into climatic parameter is still limitted.

      Shoreline features: Mifflin and Wheat (1979) also stress the importance of shoreline features in identifying basins that supported pluvial lakes. Although Enzel et al. (2017) note that shorelines may be largely obliterated in some basins by later geomorphic processes, they nevertheless remain a prime criterion. Laterally continuous, stratified, fine-grained sediment: Wave-laminated sand and silt beds with subhorizontal contacts traceable for tens to hundreds of meters typify lacustrine sediment.

      As deduced from our sedimentological and geoarchaeological findings the deposition of the uppermost clayey sequence III indicate a progressive aridification at Rasif site and many of the very distinctive well/trough structures (Excavation 3, Fig. 7) appear to have been founded during this phase of final qa deposition. Reliable data on Holocene annual precipitation is very sparse for the Northwest Arabian Peninsula (Enzel et al., 2015, 2017, Engel et al., 2017). Palaeo-rainfall during the early Holocene (8–6.5 BCE) has been approximated by Wellbrock et al. (2011) and Engel et al. (2012) for the oasis of Tayma (340 km southwest of Rasif) to be about 150 ± 25 mm per year and thus amounted to app.
