Abstract

In this paper the effect of temperature on the mechanoluminescence of Au doped phosphors of (Zn,Cd)S is described. It is found that the ML disappears beyond a particular temperature. The temperature dependence of ML intensity follows the relation I = IT0(1  T/TC)n, where IT0 is a constant, n is the slop of log IT versus log (1  T/TC) plot which lies between 0.9 and 1.10, TC is the temperature at which ML disappear. It is found that the ML intensity in (Zn,Cd)S:Au disappear at 600 K.

Experimental

ZnS and CdS are useful host matrix in luminescence studies and solid solution of ZnS, CdS are seems to be interesting which are chosen for the same. To study the effect of temperature on the ML of doped mixed phosphors, the Au activated hexagonal phosphors having activator concentration 4 × 10−3 (by weight of 1 g of matrix, 10% CdS) were chosen as they exhibit intense ML among the phosphors prepared. ZnS and CdS were taken proper proportion by adding a flux and dopant and were mixed thoroughly in

Results and discussion

The peak corresponding to ML intensity versus time curve of (Zn,Cd)S:Au,Cl phosphors, decrease and shift towards smaller values of time with increasing temperature of the phosphors, Fig. 3, Fig. 4 Shows the plot of the log I versus time “t” curve for (Zn,Cd)S:Au,Cl phosphors. It is seen that there is no change in the slop of log I versus “t” curve with increase in temperature. For the decaying portion of ML, the slop of log I versus “t” curve increases with the increasing temperature of the

The ML intensity at various wavelengths can be recorded by putting different filters of various wavelengths. The ML intensity was normalized with respect to the phosphor and different transmission coefficients of the filters [38–47]. Photoluminescence spectral measurements of the phosphor CdSe:Mn, CdS:Mn, CdS:Ag and CdS:Cu were done by “Hitachi Fluorescence Spectrometer” model 650-10 having a photomultiplier tube RCA 372F whose response is in the range 200–730 nm and has an expansible range from 220 nm to 830 nm.

For numerous applications in the field of optics, the optical properties of materials are required to be tunable and thus controllable. The optical property tunability of these materials is imperative and would be beneficial to their applicability [2,5–7]. ( CdZn)S is a high band gap material used for various optoelectronic applications in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum.
