Age modulates the nitric oxide system response in the ischemic cerebellum
2007, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :Finally, the response of the NO/NOS system to ischemia in the aged cerebellum has not received adequate attention; this is even more striking when we take into account that the cerebellum is one of the brain zones with the highest NO levels (Rodrigo et al., 1994, 2001, 2004; Siles et al., 2002). Moreover, current data show variable protein expression of the NOS system among cerebral zones, each displaying its own NO-ergic pattern (Joo et al., 2004) and enzymatic activity of the constitutive isoforms, and this must be specifically modulated (i.e. by phosphorylation/dephosphorylation mechanism) zone to zone in order to maintain the physiological level of NO essential for cognitive functions (Pitsikas et al., 2005). Considering all these antecedents, we hypothesize that cerebral aging could also be a factor that modulates the role of the NO in the ischemic process.
