    Conversely, serious life-threatening illnesses can also produce trauma. In particular, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been identified in many critical illnesses and conditions; cancer, HIV infection, and intensive care unit (ICU) stays [6,9,10]. Transplantation is similarly a psychologically intense experience with life threatening phases (waiting on the wait list for an organ, ICU stays, and episodes of organ rejection) that not surprisingly can cause PTSD.
