Summary

A group of 12 strains of Gram-negative, strictly anaerobic cocci isolated from spoiled bottled beer was found to differ significantly from Veillonella, especially in the fermentation products formed from various substrates. In this respect they closely resembled Megasphaera elsdenii. The DNA of the strains studied, however, contained only 42.4 to 44.8 mol% G+C. Since DNA/DNA hybridization revealed 72 to 100% homology among the isolates and no genomic relatedness to M. elsdenii and Veillonella parvula, a new species, Megasphaera cerevisiae, is proposed for these strains.
