Publisher Summary

With its multiplicity of cell types and complex patterns of cellular interactions, the nervous system represents the most complex organ of a metazoan organism. Understanding how neuronal circuits develop is one of the holy grails of developmental biology. This chapter presents selected areas of research in which some progress has been made over the past few years. A range of model organisms from worms to vertebrates is covered, and experimental as well as theoretical aspects of this problem are also discussed.
