Residency websites were noted to have overall low appeal due to outdated or incomplete information and not addressing key elements of how students evaluate programs, in terms of both qualitative (training environment, culture, diversity) and quantitative (program structure, pay and benefits, research support) characteristics. Concerns about postresidency employment were mentioned by focus group participants who were familiar with discussion boards and recent publications on this topic.12-14 Program websites may provide an opportunity to showcase alumni in clinical practice and other alumni achievements.

  • Increasing Medical Student Engagement Through Virtual Rotations in Radiation Oncology

    2021, Advances in Radiation Oncology
    Citation Excerpt :

Over one-third of medical students match into an institution in which they visited as an away rotation. Students spend an average of 2 to 3 rotations in radiation oncology outside of their home institution, often in another city and/or state.10,11 This utilization of away rotations as prolonged “sub internships” decreased the opportunity for many students with personal or financial constraints to consider radiation oncology as a specialty.

The differences in dedicated research time will have a significant difference in research productivity among the residents of various programs.1,8 There have been some discussions about elective rotations for medical students in RO to prepare them to be the right candidate for matching into RO residency.9 We found a limited number of scholarly activities regarding training elective rotation in related specialties like radiology.10

  • Patterns and Perceptions of “Away” Rotations Among Radiation Oncology Residency Applicants

2020, International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics
    Citation Excerpt :

A survey of all US residency applicants from 2014 to 2015 reported that 46% of radiation oncology applicants matched at a program where they completed either an away or home rotation.1 Another analysis of a publicly available, self-reported data set found that 52% of applicants matched at an away or home rotation, with 28% matching at a program where they completed an away rotation.7 Importantly, in our study there was no correlation between the number of away rotations completed and the likelihood of matching at one of those programs.
