They detect evolutionarily conserved MAMPs in microbes such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), peptidoglycan, lipoteichoic acid and β-1, 3-glucans, and transduce a signal that activates the corresponding immune response (a recent special number describes the recent progress about PRRs in invertebrates [53]). Among them, the role of lectins in the recognition of carbohydrates on the surface of pathogens has generated interest due to the differences found between species.
