  • Molecular characterization of peptidoglycan recognition proteins from Mytilus coruscus

    Citation Excerpt :

However, the immune system of Mytilus is still largely unknown, such as how Mytilus recognize various microbes of living waters and initiate subsequent immune cascades to eliminate harmful invaders. As revealed by previous studies, the pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) of invertebrates’ innate immunity are employed to discriminate self from non-self [8]. To date, at least seven types of PRRs with important roles in immune reorganization and regulation have been identified from bivalves [9].

  • Nanoparticles and trained immunity: Glimpse into the future

    2021, Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews
    Citation Excerpt :

Until recently, the innate immune response in invertebrates seemed to rely solely on a rather limited set of PRRs. They detect evolutionarily conserved MAMPs in microbes such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), peptidoglycan, lipoteichoic acid and β-1, 3-glucans, and transduce a signal that activates the corresponding immune response (a recent special number describes the recent progress about PRRs in invertebrates [53]). Among them, the role of lectins in the recognition of carbohydrates on the surface of pathogens has generated interest due to the differences found between species.
